Christ was put to death as a human, but made alive by the Spirit,Peter said and it was by the Spirit that he went to preach to the spirits in prison. The incarcerated souls, Peter adds, were those who were "disobedient" during the making the ark times.

Jesus said he was going to Paradise can also refer to Abraham's Bosom, a chamber deep within the earth or some place of comfort and safety where Abraham, David, and all the righteous souls were kept until Christ came to win over death. If so, then He very well may have meant that the criminal would be in Paradise with Him, and that would answer where Christ was between death and resurrection.
